What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a health condition that affects the musculoskeletal system. It’s more common in women than in men and has no known cause. Doctors and researchers believe that a malfunction in the neurological system amplifies pain signals that travel to and from the brain to certain areas of the body. Symptoms often begin to appear after a patient has experienced some form of trauma. This includes psychological stress, traumatic injury or extensive surgery. Each case is diagnosed on an individual basis with each patient exhibiting a unique set of symptoms varying degrees of severity. Individuals who are diagnosed with fibromyalgia are often diagnosed with other chronic conditions as well, including anxiety, tension headaches, and irritable bowel syndrome.

What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia affects the musculoskeletal system that includes the muscles, joints, and connective tissues throughout the entire body. The most common symptoms reported by fibromyalgia sufferers include pain that radiates outward from the joints, extreme fatigue, problems mood swings, sleep disorders, and memory loss. Symptoms often build over time, gradually increasing in severity until the patient begins to realize something is wrong. Because most fibromyalgia symptoms are easily associated with other health conditions, the patient may not realize what is causing them. Visiting a doctor as soon as multiple symptoms are recognized is the key to an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan.

How is fibromyalgia treated?

Because the symptoms are so varied, one treatment plan may not work for everyone.

The most common treatments are:

  • Medications prescribed to help control the pain and discomfort in the joints
  • Relaxation techniques to relieve physical and mental stress
  • Exercises to relieve muscle tension and improve flexibility and range of motion

The longer a person fights the symptoms without receiving treatment, the more their joints may be affected. Mild forms of exercise and stretching can gradually relieve the tension in the joints, allowing them to move more smoothly and with less pain and discomfort. Antidepressants and positive lifestyle changes may be able to improve sleep patterns and provide a better quality of life.
